{president’s message} Participate and Appreciate

by Paul Yorkis | Dec 28, 2016
I am honored to be your 2017 President of the Massachusetts Association of Realtors® (MAR). Serving with me are Rita Coffey, 2017 President-Elect, Anne Meczywor, Secretary/Treasurer, and Annie Blatz, Immediate Past President. The four of us, along with MAR Executive Vice President Rob Authier, make up your 2017 Leadership Team.
Our goal for 2017 is ensuring that you receive the highest possible return on your dues
investment. One of the best ways to do that is to participate in any of our annual MAR activities. I’m not asking that you participate in every event, but if you could participate
in one more than you did last year, that would be great. I know the more involved I became in MAR, the more valuable my membership was, and continues to be.

Here are some of the annual activities you might consider in 2017. In late spring we host Realtor® Day on Beacon Hill. This is our annual grassroots lobbying day when we go to the Massachusetts State House and emphasize our Legislative and Public Policy positions. Some of the issues this year are: zoning reform, housing production, energy
conservation and efficiency, and flood insurance.

Last year we held our first Massachusetts Realtor® Day at Fenway Park. Over 475 Realtor® members and friends attended the fun event. This year’s game is June 11, 2017, vs. The Detroit Tigers. Go to Groupmatics.Events/Event/Realtor to order tickets. The deadline is January 31.

Our annual Conference and Tradeshow is already scheduled for September at the Sea Crest Beach Resort in Falmouth. And for the first time, our state conference will be held back-to-back with the New England Realtor® Conference. Both events will be packed with national speakers and numerous educational and networking opportunities.

Another Realtor® activity to consider is the National Association of Realtors® Mid-Year Meeting in Washington, D.C. in May. Registration is free to Realtors®. Some of the federal issues we’ll be advocating for are the mortgage interest tax deduction, the
continued existence of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the national flood insurance program.

Our meetings with our federal representatives directly impact their understanding of our profession. Walking the halls of Congress is quite the experience and one I think every Realtor® should have at least once. If you’re interested, I suggest speaking to your fellow Realtors® who have participated in prior Capitol Hill visits to get their take on the experience.

There are three new MAR initiatives I ask you to consider supporting. These are our
Homelessness Initiatives, Global Initiatives, and State Political Coordinator Programs:

  • Homelessness program: will bring together Realtors® from across the state, along with representatives from several non-governmental organizations and elected and appointed local, state, and federal officials, to go to bat to reduce homelessness in Massachusetts.
  • The Global Initiatives program will bring Massachusetts Realtors® together to share experiences and opportunities in order to better serve the increasing global individual and business clientele moving to the Commonwealth and possible joint sponsorships of programs with the Asian American Association of Realtors® and
the Hispanic Association of Realtors® and others.
  • The State Political Coordinator (SPC) Program is designed to provide Realtors® the
opportunity to take the MAR Legislative Program directly to members of the state legislature. Members will engage with legislators whenever there is an issue that we need to weigh in on. The SPC program is part of our effort to provide you the greatest possible opportunity to go to bat for our profession and private property rights. Contact your local association for more information.
This is just a sampling of what is available for you to participate in. I encourage you to reach out to me or any other member of the 2017 MAR Leadership Team with questions or suggestions on how we might better serve you and meet your membership expectations.
