New REALTOR® Initiatives to Impact Advocacy

REALTOR® Day on Beacon Hill is coming up soon, scheduled for Wednesday, June 11, and I look forward to seeing many of you there. As we approach our annual trek to the State House to show member support for our year round lobbying efforts, I wanted to let you know about some of the exciting things we have going on at MAR regarding our political and advocacy initiatives.
I’m sure that you’re well aware of the major issues affecting real estate right now, including flood insurance, GSE reform, protecting the MID, and more.
Our Government Affairs Committee and our MAR legal staff continuously monitor and address the many issues affecting our members and the real estate industry. However,
we have some other exciting things happening in this area.
Our REALTOR® Party Initiative Presidential Advisory Group (RPI PAG) continues to evaluate the prospect of Independent Expenditures (IE’s) on both the state and local level in Massachusetts. IE’s commonly take the form of an advertisement done in support of a particular candidate for office without their knowledge or consent. As you may imagine, there are pros and cons to this and it’s something this group is weighing very carefully before making a recommendation.
A Member Mobilization Task Force was formed in December to look at ways to Coordinate efforts and resources at the national, state, and local levels to better advocate for our members and for private property rights. This group is also looking at ways to generate more grass roots participation of both our members and, when appropriate, members of the public.
We are also rolling out a new program called State Political Coordinator (SPC). This program is modeled after NAR’s Federal Political Coordinator (FPC) program, and pairs
REALTORS® with state level legislators to act as official ambassadors/liaisons. The SPC will have a good working relationship with their respective legislator and will chiefly
serve to educate them and their staff on Realtor® issues, thanking them for their support as appropriate, and involve themselves with any possible financial support through our RPAC efforts.
So what can you do to help? There are three simple yet very effective ways to help. First and foremost: VOTE. Secondly, you can INVEST in RPAC to help support
REALTOR® efforts at all three levels. Last but not least, you can PARTICIPATE in Calls For Action that come out periodically when there are important issues where we need to send a message to lawmakers. I hope I can count on your help to make this year successful.
