How Social Media Can Take Your Conference Experience to the Next Level

Not only are conferences and events a great time to learn, but they can grow your sphere of influence and expand your network. Using social media during these events can actually enhance these benefits. Social media allows you to connect with others online and keep track of the best presentation takeaways. You can use Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to keep up with event happenings by following the event hashtag and getting engaged. 

Before       

Use social media to prepare for the event. If this is your first time attending, use it to see who is coming and what to expect. If you’ve attended before, position yourself as a person of influence by sharing what you are looking forward to or tips for first-time attendees.       

To get the latest updates, follow accounts associated with the event and keep tabs on the event hashtag. You can also use the hashtag yourself to share your excitement! You will be surprised at how many people will recognize you from your post, and this will make networking onsite easier. 

During     

Social media is a great way to stay informed during an event or conference. Use Twitter to see what other attendees are saying in real time. If you keep up with the accounts, you’ll be the first to know  about last minute changes to the schedule—or free donuts—and you can read what important takeaways others are sharing.     

Social media is a great way to connect with others. Engage with others who are tweeting or posting with the event hashtag. Comment  on and share their posts, and follow those you want to stay connected with.  
       
Take photos of the conference, with your colleagues or with a speaker - and post them! Be sure to tag your friends and acquaintances.       

Instead of taking notes, share your key takeaways on social media. This not only positions you as an 
industry authority, but may make it easy for you to find and use your notes later. It can also be a great way to connect with keynote speakers and people of influence. If you quote and then tag them, they will most likely retweet or reply to you, which is the perfect way to start new conversation.   

After       

You can keep your social media momentum going even after the event is over. Review your posts and share a summary of what you learned on your blog. Stay engaged with those you connected with at the event and continue to develop those relationships.       

Social media is a great way to improve your conference experience, but don’t let it take the place of face-to-face communication. And don’t feel like you have to use every single social media channel out there. Pick the one you use or like the most and be sure to use the official hashtag! #marcon2018
