Once again, Realtors® Will Make a Difference

by GARY ROGERS, 2018 Chair of the National Association of Realtors®Meeting and Conference Committee | Feb 28, 2018
At every level of the Realtor® Association, I’ve witnessed the tremendous amount of charitable work being done by Realtors®. We invest our time, money, and heart into many, many important organizations.
Whether it’s fund raising, serving on boards, or donating to help those affected by tragedies and disasters, the scope of the work is amazing.

When Realtors® are asked, “why do you do it?” The answer is essentially the same, “We have a responsibility to our community. It’s where we live and where we make our living.” It is obvious that as Realtors®, we are driven by our compassion and caring for the people in our communities.

Whether you’re reading this magazine or Realtor® Magazine, you know our Association annually recognizes those Realtors® who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to helping others. These recognitions include the Good Neighbor Awards both nationally and here at the state level. There are also additional local awards.

In fact, if you’ve ever had the opportunity to attend the general session at NAR’s annual Conference & Expo, you know how much work these Realtors® have done for important causes. Every year, there are not many dry eyes, as the stories are packed with so much emotion and commitment by our fellow Realtors® that the tears just come pouring down. Looking around the crowd it’s a very common occurrence.

Yet, what I don't find surprising is that these Good Neighbor recipients don’t want or get involved for the recognition. They get involved because it’s the right thing to do.

You Can Make a Difference in November:

If you haven’t heard by now, you should know that NAR’s 2018 Realtors® Conference & Expo is returning to Boston for the first time since 1929. As chair of the NAR Meeting and Conference Committee you can imagine how excited I am to show off Boston to the 20,000 plus Realtors® from across the country and the world who typically attend!

I’m also excited to let you know, that for the first time, we will be hosting a 5k road race to benefit several local charities and the Realtors® Relief Foundation (RRF).

If you don’t know about the RRF, it’s NAR’s charitable arm that was started in response to September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001. The fund initially paid the mortgages of victim’s families, but soon after, it was expanded and now provides funds to the victims of hurricanes, floods, wild fires, and earthquakes. To date, it has given out over $25 million to families in need, in times of crisis. This is all possible through the generosity of you, our members.

While it’s not the big “road race” Boston is famous for, The Realtor®Relief Run 5K is a way we can all get involved and help. The funds raised will go to replenishing the massive amount of money that has been distributed to those in need over the last few years.

Because “All real estate is local,” we wanted to make sure we didn’t forget about those who live in our community right here in Massachusetts who need help. In addition to the Realtor® Relief Fund, we will be donating a portion of the money raised to three Boston charities that provide shelter as well as job training and placement services to the homeless.

Getting Involved:

While registration for the Conference & Expo will open in May, you can sign up now for the Realtor® Relief Run at You can enter the race as an individual or you can enter a team. The race course is still being planned but will start and finish by the Boston Common. It will be fun whether you run, walk, or just cheer, and more importantly, we should be able to help raise a lot of money for a great cause! See you at the start line in November!
