Literally wind and water, Feng Shui (pronounced fung schway) is the ancient Chinese art of creating beauty, harmony, and tranquility in any environment while living in harmony with nature. Artful furniture placement; a balance of elements, color, sound, scent, lighting, and artwork; and decorative accessories all contribute to creating positive chi. When chi is flowing, you attract greater abundance, new opportunities, and success. Implementing feng shui does not require undue disruptions, extensive modifications, or expensive changes to your home.
Applying the principles of feng shui to your office environment can mean moving desks and tables to more favorable positions, understanding where to sit at a meeting to increase the power of your presence, or introducing or rearranging plants and artwork. Feng shui was developed about 5,000 years ago in China by people who were close to the land and who were dependent on agricultural success for their survival. They studied and observed how locating their homes and farms in relation to hills and rivers affected their families, their relationships, and their fortunes.
Over a period of centuries, as its development matured through the work of scholars and philosophers, feng shui became a highly sophisticated system. It gained credence as its practices were adopted by the Chinese royal families who brought it into their homes. Today, feng shui is recognized by millions of people across the globe as a way of living with intention that brings greater balance and harmony into their hectic lives.
