You have my personal invitation to join me in participating in your industry’s political advocacy efforts. And my invitation is multi-layered! I hope you won’t tune me out after this opening and instead hang in here for a minute while I explain. “Political Advocacy” and several invitations might sound daunting, time consuming, and complicated, but I promise you it isn’t as overwhelming as it sounds and it absolutely matters to all of us.
Our industry is heavily regulated and proposed laws, ordinances, and taxes at the local, state, and national levels threaten property rights and how we do business on a daily basis. We have to be informed, involved, and prepared to maintain our businesses and help buyers and sellers achieve their goals.
And it’s not as hard as it may sound. When I first took the plunge I was nervous. I was anticipating that I had to know every issue completely, but I was wrong. Rest assured that you can get involved without needing to be an expert. My first invitation is to attend the Realtor® Day on Beacon Hill on June 5. This is the annual opportunity for REALTORS® to join together and voice our positions
Your local Association will coordinate meeting or travelling together so don’t hesitate to contact them. We’ll meet in Great Hall of the Mass. State House at 9:30 a.m. and it’s a pride filled moment to see the few hundred REALTORS® from around the state who gather. We’ll have the opportunity to hear from Attorney General Martha Coakley this year and receive a briefing on pertinent issues. Then we’ll travel with members from our areas to visit with each elected official. But don’t worry! You don’t have to speak up if you don’t want to; just your presence is an amazing support of your industry and the Association.
I hope to see you on Beacon Hill, and in addition I invite you to take part in Calls for Action from the state and national levels. Log on to marealtor.com and realtor.org and find out more, make sure you are registered and support property rights when asked. All it takes is a click of a button on your computer to send a message to your legislator stating our position on an issue.
And lastly, I invite you to support RPAC, a grassroots political network of REALTORS® who raise campaign contributions for pro-REALTOR® candidates, mobilize REALTOR® voters, and promote critical legislative and regulatory issues affecting the real estate industry. Participation is participation, no matter the amount.
See I told you, my invitations are reasonable. There’s no heavy lifting here. I’m inviting you to be aware and involved in your business and your Association which does everything it can to support your business. I look forward to seeing you on June 5!
