President’s Message: Volunteerism = Success
6/30/2010

By Kevin Sears

If you volunteer for the REALTOR® organization, you gain more than just the benefit of helping your Association, you achieve more business success. I’ve volunteered for several years; I know this to be true, and here’s how.

When you volunteer on the local, state, or national Association levels by serving on a committee, board of directors, or in leadership, you become better informed. Local Association volunteerism exposes you to regional market information, legislative issues, and industry trends that you may not have access to now.

Serving on the state and national level simply exposes you to much more information. You’re informed on real estate issues and learn how you and your fellow members can impact decisions made in the legislature that deal with the protection of private property rights.

Then, as you become better informed, you become a resource of information to others. Local REALTORS® will benefit from your knowledge of Association news and events. Your insight will be welcomed within your local communities, and before you know it, you’ve become a valuable source in the community. This results in you becoming a better REALTOR®. You are knowledgeable, engaged, and can fully participate as an experienced professional in your industry.

From there it’s an easy jump to becoming more successful in your business. You’re networking, you’re learning, and you’re sharing your wealth of knowledge and consumers see it. So what are you waiting for?

There are resources available to help you become a REALTOR® volunteer. Your local association would welcome your input on a committee or in a leadership position. And the state and national Association staff can assist you in finding the right position for you and your interests. Both levels also nurture future leaders through the Leadership Academy. MAR is holding its fifth Academy this year, developed to help members learn how to become a leader in business, in their personal life, and in the REALTOR® organization.

I was fortunate enough to graduate from the NAR Leadership Academy in 2007 and found the experience invaluable. You too can appreciate the value that volunteerism has to offer and reap the benefits of becoming a better REALTOR®. Again, what are you waiting for?
