Springfield resident and broker-owner Kevin Sears of Sears Real Estate, also in Springfield, was installed on December 3, 2009 as president of the 20,000-member Massachusetts Association of Realtors® (MAR) for 2010.  The event took place at the National Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield and included the installation of the MAR Board of Directors and Executive Committee.  Sears’s term officially begins on January 1, 2010.

As president, Sears will direct the internal and external activities of the Association; preside at all meetings of the MAR Board of Directors and Executive Committee; represent the Association at important meetings and business functions; and act as the official spokesperson for the Association on issues related to the real estate industry and local housing market.  In addition, he will represent MAR and its members on the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) Board of Directors and the New England Realtors® Committee this year, and also will serve as an ex-officio member of all state Association committees and work groups.

Prior to being elected president, Sears served as president-elect in 2009 and MAR secretary-treasurer in 2008.  Sears was also the 2007 Government Affairs Committee Chair and was a MAR director for seven years.  In addition to serving on the Finance, REALTOR® of the Year and Professional Standards Committees, Sears served three consecutive one-year terms as chairman of the state Association’s REALTOR® Political Action Committee (RPAC) from 2004 to 2006.  He has been involved with the association’s International Council of REALTORS®, and has served on the MAR Business Planning in recent years.  In 2006, Sears was named the Massachusetts REALTOR® of the Year.

A REALTOR® since 1994, Sears has served the REALTOR® organization as a Federal Political Coordinator to Bay State Congressman Richard Neal (D-Springfield) for nearly 10 years.  He served as a Trustee of the REALTOR® Political Action Committee of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) from 2007 to present he served as a member of NAR’s Board of Directors in 2008 and 2009, and participated in NAR’s home build to support Habitat for Humanity’s Operation Home Delivery, an initiative to construct new homes for hurricane victims on the Gulf Coast. He also served on NAR’s REALTOR® Political Involvement Committee from 2003-2008.  Sears graduated as a member of NAR’s 2007/2008 inaugural Leadership Academy class. 

On the local level, Sears was a director and chairman of the Government Affairs Committee for the REALTOR® Association of the Pioneer Valley (RAPV) in 2006 and has been a member of the committee since 1994.  A past president of his local association, he also is a former treasurer and secretary of the RAPV, and a past chairman of its Finance and Strategic Planning Committees.  Additionally, he was a member and former chairman of the RAPV’s Communications Technology Task Force, and has served on the association’s RPAC Sub-committee since 1994.  Sears was selected as the 2006 Realtor of the Year for the Realtor® Association of the Pioneer Valley.

In his hometown, Sears is a member and former director of both the Rental Housing Association of Greater Springfield and the local Forest Park Civic Association.  He also is an active member of the Springfield Rotary Club, and a director of the Mason Wright Retirement Community, an assisted living facility that provides housing for low-income seniors and elderly residents in the Greater Springfield area, and a Little League coach.
