WALTHAM, Mass. – September 19, 2012 – The Massachusetts Association of REALTORS® (MAR) announced today that the late Jack Conway of Scituate, founder of Jack Conway & Company REALTORS®, has been named recipient of the MAR Milton H. Shaw Distinguished Service Award for 2012. The award, which was presented posthumously, was accepted by his daughter Carol Bulman at MAR’s Professional Awards Reception, which was held in conjunction with the Association’s 2012 Conference and Tradeshow at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island.
First awarded in 1984, the Milton H. Shaw Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to one REALTOR® member or staff executive who has demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities and volunteered countless hours of personal time to serve on state association committees and participate in MAR activities.
“There are not too many figures in the Massachusetts real estate industry more iconic than Jack Conway,” said 2012 MAR President Trisha McCarthy, broker at Keller Williams Realty in Newburyport. “Very active at all three levels of the REALTOR® Association, Conway did a lot to promote the value of REALTOR® membership. The committee could think of no better way to honor his life and his contributions than to present him the distinguished service award named after his good friend and colleague Milton H. Shaw.”
Conway, who passed away this past summer at 88, was MAR president in 1970 and 1971. He was Massachusetts REALTOR® of the year in 1970 and also National Association of REALTORS® Region 1 Vice President in 1977. He played an integral role in all three levels of the REALTOR® Association and in 2006 he was awarded REALTOR® Emeritus.
Conway started in the real estate business in 1954 after a stint as a Boston newspaper reporter. In 1956 he started Jack Conway & Company in Hingham Square. At the time of his death, Conway’s company had grown to 40 offices with over 600 sales agents. It continues to be one of the largest independent real estate companies in Massachusetts.
Jack remained a writer from his reporting days and wrote several books about his travels and collected his essays about the real estate business in several volumes that are used by his agents and managers. Conway was also a philanthropist and active in his community and church.
Recent past recipients of the MAR’s distinguished service award include: David Peretti, of Winchester, in 2011; Jane Fine, of Worcester in 2010; Peter Casey, of Weston, in 2009; Corrine Fitzgerald, of Northfield, in 2008; Richard “Dick” Dils, of Shelburne Falls, in 2007; David S.
